Survey results on status of ocean forecasting and future needs for Africa

The OceanPrediction Decade Collaborative Centre (DCC), in collaboration with the African Ocean Decade Taskforce, launched a survey in April 2024 to gather insights from experts on the current state, challenges and future prospects of ocean forecasting services in Africa.
134 responses were collected with 60% coming from experts affiliated with African institutions. The survey reveals the importance of ocean forecasting and its future development for Africa, accompanied by a strong desire among African experts for African-built solutions to African problems. This report highlights results and analysis explored by the survey, including existing ocean forecasting-driven applications, the need for new and upgraded services, collaborative frameworks and cross-cutting challenges on the African regional and continental level.
