The Mediterranean – Monitoring Forecasting Centre (MED MFC) aims to provide regular and systematic information about the physical state and marine ecosystems of the Mediterranean Sea.
The system is based on numerical models, which assimilate in situ and satellite observational data. A main purpose of MED MFC is to be an expert centre for reanalysis, analyses and forecasts in the Mediterranean Sea. It gathers expertise and knowledge in the field of the regional Mediterranean Sea dynamics (from waves to currents) and biogeochemistry, it is an interface with local data collection networks, and it enhances technical links with other Copernicus Marine Service components. Moreover, MED MFC’s objectives include the planning and efficient implementation of systems upgrades, product quality assessment, and support to the production of the Ocean State Report (OSR) and Ocean Monitoring Indicators (OMIs).
MED MFC is led by Fondazione CMCC – Euro Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC, IT) with participation of National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics (OGS, IT), the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR, GR), and the supercomputing center CINECA (IT).
