Data science and artificial intelligence are some of the methods used by MARION, the marine pollution prevention system developed at IHCantabria.
The results of this project will serve as the basis for implementing -in the Bay of Santander and the coast of Cantabria- an operational oceanography system and a bathing water quality and marine pollution prevention and management system.
The development of new techniques and tools based on innovative methods, such as data science and artificial intelligence, will contribute to improving the prevention and management of bathing water quality and marine pollution in coastal environments. This is the main objective of MARION, one of the 17 projects that make up the Marine Sciences Program (PCM) at the Institute of Environmental Hydraulics of the University of Cantabria (IHCantabria), whose implementation began in September 2023.
This project will develop methodologies and tools based on numerical, hybrid and artificial intelligence modeling, with a double objective: on the one hand, to obtain the high-resolution marine variables required in coastal environments (including bays and estuaries), and, on the other hand, to offer new AI-based methods that allow to create forecast systems for bathing water quality and prevention and management systems against marine pollution.
As the main result of the project, the following products and services are under development :
- CANT-Coastal Modelling System (CANT-CMS): a coastal operational oceanography system nested to IBI-MFC to provide the forecast of ocean variables (~300 m spatial resolution) in the Cantabrian coast (Gulf of Biscay).
- SDR- Local Modelling System (SDR – LMS): a local operational oceanography system nested to CANT-CMS to provide the forecast of ocean variables (~50 m spatial resolution) in Santander Bay (Gulf of Biscay).
- IH-TESEO: an online modelling system nested to national and international providers, such as CMEMS at global and regional scale, as well as to CANT-CMS to provide the simulation and forecast of oil spills, HNS spills, drifting objects and Search and Rescue worldwide.
- CICLOPE: a deep-learning based operational forecast system nested to IBI-MFC and CANT-CMS to provide water quality forecast at beaches and recreational areas in Santander Bay and Cantabrian coast.
